History

The International Percussion Festival in Opole was initiated in 1988 by Wojciech Lasek, then the director and teacher in percussion class of 1st and 2nd degree at the Opole Music School.

Initially it was a typical school event; however, its standing was progressively rising and already the third edition became a serious international festival. In the past ten years the following musicians performed in Opole:

Bill Molenhof (USA), prof. Klaus Tresselt (D), Bernard Kolberg (D), N.J. Żivković (HR), Ryszard Pusz (AUS), Heinz von Moisy (D), Tomasz Stańko (PL), Adam Cegielski (PL), Cezary Konrad (PL), Joseph Herter (USA), Krzysztof Ścierański (PL), Paweł Ścierański (PL), Gunnar Augland (NL), Gabor Sznedi (H), Marek Błata (PL), Krzysztof "Puma" Piasecki (PL), Jan Cichy (PL), Mirosław Sitkowski (PL), Ney Gabriel Rusauro, William Kraft (USA), Zbigniew Lewandowski (PL), Ruud Wiener (NL), David Friedman (USA), Marinus Komst (NL), Bill Bruford (GB), Nippy Noya (NL), Dorbi Paliev (BUL), Carl Palmer (U.K), Gregg Bissonette (USA), Jose Tores (PL).

In 1990, during the festival, organizers arranged national-scale auditions for percussion students from all Music Schools of 2nd degree.

A year later, under the aegis of C.E.A., other auditions took place and in 1998 National Auditions for Chamber Percussion Groups from Music Schools of 2nd degree were set up.

Therefore in the next five years teachers and students from all Music Schools in Poland had a unique chance to participate in both workshops and concerts performed by world-famous percussionists.

Unfortunately, soon afterwards, auditions ceased being a part of the festival. The decision was made by clerks who were against this idea.

The integral part of the festival was the exhibition of percussion instruments.

The festival has always been organized by the Percussion Association.

The organization committee has changed several times yet the majority of events was organized by: Małgorzata Kowalska, Mariola Fedorowicz, Wojciech Lasek.

All workshops and concerts have taken place in the Opole Philharmonics and in the National Music School of 1st and 2nd degree in Opole. In 1997 the Festival organizers were awarded a prize by the Percussive Arts Society for organization achievements in the filed of percussion events, competitions and festivals activity. They were also considered the biggest Percussion Organization in the world.
